To Mourn or Not To Mourn

Some first-hand experiences from Karachi on the night of Benazir's assassination

It started as a normal day in Karachi. I decided to visit the crowded city-center and had almost finished shopping around Maghrib prayer (6pm). The market was far from slowing down as Eid-ul-Azha was just over. I heard a man in the market saying "Benazir is killed, close down the shop". I first thought it was a rumour, but in few seconds people started running in panic and the shops started shutting down. Less than five minutes later, the M.A.Jinnah Road that was bustling with life and business was filled with panic and darkness. Some shop-owners told me that they had never seen such panic and instant shutdown before.

It took us 4 hours to reach home instead of a typical 1-hour journey. Thankfully we had a car, but we had to take several detours, encounter traffic jams, drive over broken glass, cool down our over-heated car... finally, less than kilometer away from home, we were in front of a serious arson and there was no safe way to proceed in car. We let our driver (with other friends) go take a different route and ourselves (my brother and I) started to walk through dark alleys, looking behind us rising clouds of black smoke. We reached home and found some relatives and family friends taking refuge there. Everyone I talked to since then has a different story of reaching home (some even ran through cross-fires).

There was no sign of law-enforcement agencies throughout our journey, not oven traffic police! Had there not those guys on the roads voluntarily controlling traffic by risking their lives, people would've to spend whole night in the cars being stuck in worst traffic jams of city's history.

Having seen complete chaos, thugs started looting hoards of pedestrians of their money and mobile phones. I met a man who told me that he was resisting giving up his phone; the hooligans beat him. There were rumours of poisoning of water from source, but water-board spokesman on television quickly cleared these rumours.

In this time of pandemonium, nice gestures are also not scarce. People who were unable to reach home that fateful night stayed in houses of relatives and even mosques. Our mosque appealed for food and blankets and it was poured with help. The near-by "Pathan hotel" brought trays full of bread and people brought blankets and pillows. People later left next morning walking miles and miles as there still was (and is) no public transport. Like the guys were controlling traffic, some people were giving water to people stuck in traffic. Many warned us of dangerous roads ahead. Almost everyone was talking to someone on mobile phone giving and taking directions of safer routes.

While the event in Rawalpindi is sad, the events that followed in other parts of the country are even more disturbing. There are some gestures of humanity in the middle of looters and angry protestors. Some are shocked at the death of this remarkable woman, for others its only a long-predicted end of a corrupt politician. To mourn or not to mourn, this is the question of today in Pakistan.

Camp Candy re-discovered

Camp Candy was my most favourite cartoon at one point. Its theme song would stick to my brain for long time. I could even sing the last long note "Camp Candyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy..." pretty well ;-).

YouTube has only one entry for this cartoon (theme song) here:

...ahh memories!

Fabricated Languages

There are some languages fabricated by humans for some specific or general human use.
For example the author of Star Trek invented a language specially for its characters.

There is one fabricated language getting popular: Toki Pona (meaning Simple Language)

Interesting stuff.

Story of Second Cup

Frank Aude
Founder of Second Cup (started in 1975).

He says: We had a small shop where we sold raw coffee, something that was usual in those times. Then suddenly we thought

Why not we set a coffee machione at the counter outside and let them taste coffee before they buy the beans.

Why not we charge them for testing it.

Why not charge more than anyone else so that they feel special when they drink our coffee.

Frank has written a book: When All you have is Hope, about his journey of Second Cup

Dreams OnDemand

I have sent the following letter to The Currect program on CBC Radio about a personal experience that I cannot forget...

Hi Anna-Maria,

Today you had a program with Jeff Warren about dreams and how we can "visit" some places while dreaming.

I would like to share one experience I had 4 yours ago.

A few months after I arrived in Canada, I started getting homesick. I was especially missing my little niece.
One night I was so desperate that I decided to see her in my dream! I decided that tonight in my dream, I want to see and touch her.
That very night, I was able to able to see her sleeping. I kissed on her forehead and lifted her up in my arms. I vividly remember feeling her weight in my arms. Right at that point I woke up and saw that my both arms were lifted up as if I am holding a sleeping child.

I was surprised at the power of dreams and the amazing possibility of deciding what to dream.

Regards,

Faraz Anwar.
Montreal, QC.

And got a reply the same day! :)

Wow ... very interesting. Thank you for this. I will be sure to forward this to the staff as well for their interest before I leave today.

Take care,

Letter to Mr. President

My letter to the president Musharraf on the funny website: www.presidentofpakistan.gov.pk

~
Mr. President,
Thank you for giving me a good laugh while reading the letters to you on this website.
This website shows that people of Pakistan have a good sense of humour - perhaps the only 'sense' left with us after the departure of 'sense of pride', 'sense of resposibility' and the 'common sense'.

Salutes,
Faraz.

I hope to get a funny response!! :-P

Sixty-five cents

"Mesdames et mesieures, je suis un criminel car je n'ai pas soxant-cinq pieces" (1), a man said in train this morning.
The security guards came to check train passes and tickets. I was in the first car this morning, where they started from. They asked tickets from a man who was with his young daughter.
The man showed his ticket. The security guards noted that  the ticket is missing 65 cents, therefore they wanted the man to identify himself so that they can charge him with offence. The man refused to show his id-card and insisted that he should be let go as this is not a big crime.

"Arretez-moi, arretez mon fille"(2), said the man as he got more irritated.
The security  guards were resilient and in the end, I  saw that the man was taking his id-cards out from his wallet.

During this debacle, I noticed something that inspired me to write this in my blog.
Even during the heat of argument, both the man and the security guards kept their voices low. They  did  not swear at each other, let alone any physical contact. How was it possible? Alright, the man was not in  a position to raise his hand, but the security guards had power. They were so well trained to contain their emotions that you would hardly hear their voice.

Something to reflect!

(1) "Ladies and gentlemen, I am a criminal because I don't have coins of sixty-five cents."
(2) "Arrest me, arrest my daughter."

Anniversary of a Holocaust

Late night of Aug 5th, 1946, Dr. Suntaro Hida in Hiroshima was waken up by a man. He came from a nearby village and was pleading the doctor to go with him to see his granddaughter who had a heat-stroke. With kindness, the doctor went with the villager on his bicycle. This act saved him next morning of August 6th from being a direct victim of the savage attack of the cowards.

Today is the the 61st anniversary of atomic attack of USA on Japan.

Social Networking

Here is my speech I delivered yesterday (in my Toastmasters club) as first project of Technical Presentations Manual.
This was targetted towards a mixed audience of all knowledge levels. A powerpoint accompanied the speech.
Enjoy... (all rights reserved)

* Social Networking *
Project: Technical Briefing of Technical Manual

Introduction

Do you exist? Where do you exist? Why do you exist?

Mr. Chairperson, fellow TM and distinguished guests.

These questions have been bothering philosophers for ages. Existence, in today's world, has taken more complex forms than   ever before. One such existence, and I would say the most popular existence beside you physical one, is: Online Existence.

My goal for this series of speeches, this one being the first, is to take you through the world of online existence. i.e. your presence on   the Internet, the way you see the world, and the way the world sees you!!

Most of you already have a good idea of what Internet is. But for the sake of those who are not so sure, I will briefly introduce the world of Internet.

Internet

What on earth is Internet?? Everyone is talking about it, from children to seniors, men or women, rich or poor, good or evil, everyone is talking about internet these days.

When many computers are connected together and have the capability of talking to each other, a network is born. When many networks join hands and start talking to each other, it makes Inter-Network, of in simple, Internet.

Initially the Internet was invented for military communications, but soon the academics started using it for civil purposes too. And you know when students get hold of something; it's bound to get popular. J

Social Networks

Electronic Mail, or email, became the primary means of communications. Some people thought that only sending emails is not enough, so they started living their life on Internet. They would spend more and more time online and started interacting with other people. This was the beginning of a new existence: The Online Existence.

Internet is a huge source of information. There are billions of pages worth of information written and saved on computers that are shared with the world. Recently Jack told me that he's been reading Wikipedia lately and thinks that he must have read almost half of the whole website… he must be kidding!!

But all this text of information is separate from the Social Networking facet of the Internet. In the Social Networks, important is not what information you share (means the correctness of it), but who you share it with, how you share, and with how many people.

Lets take a look at in what ways Internauts socialize.

And by the way this term is used casually for those who exist online. Inspired by Astronauts, though nothing less!

Types of Social Networks

 Internet is used for:

  • Chatting and live messaging
  • Emails and other messages
  • Sharing ideas on particular topic
  • Sharing day-to-day thoughts or routines
  • Finding a job
  • Making new friends
  • Finding your Love of Life
  • Helping or seeking help, learn
  • Getting popular, promoting Personal Brand
  • Parallel Life

What to expect / What not to expect

Believe me, expectations go high when you are first introduced to Social Networking. Some of the expectations include:

  • You are able to share yours thoughts and exercise freedom of speech
  • You can get valuable information from people's firsthand experiences, much better than conventional, corporate-controlled media.
  • You might be able to help, might get help in small jobs

Besides these, you should not expect that:

  • You will become a celebrity overnight
  • Everything you see/hear/read is correct
  • Nobody knows what you do (no anonymity )
  • People care about your privacy
  • Everything is free on Internet

Conclusion

Now you have seen what is Internet. You have also seen how your Existence has taken a new meaning in the world of Internet.

My future presentations will focus on a specific kind of social network and we will see what Social Networking has in store for you.

Age of Persuation

CBC Radio1 had an interesting series about marketing and advertisement world: Age of Persuation (http://www.oreillyradio.com)
Terry O'Reilly presented this very well and that was my must-listen program on the radio.

I add an excerpt from the program's blog:

Singapore Airlines, for example, dresses its flight attendants in a special silk made exclusively for the airline. The attendants wear a special frangrance created especially for them, which they also lightly spray onto the hot towels they distribute. The meals are created for the airline by top chefs, and everything the pilots say are scripted for maximum effect.

Mercedes has an entire division dedicated just to the "sound" their car door makes when it closes!

Clearly, advertisers are taking this seriously.

Once I attended a presentation of Mitch Joel (http://www.twistimage.com/blog/) about Personal Branding... thats a powerful concept and is used over the world knowing or not knowing. Better know and make your own brand, then dont know and destroy your brand. Brand is always there.

Storm in Karachi

There was a severe wind and rainstorm in Karachi on June 23rd. Around 200 losses of lives is reported.

The pictures are taken from bbc.co.uk

Check this fateful car on SharaeFaisal (YouTube/1:06 min)

On a lighter note, one of my relatives had chicken house on the rooftop of his building. After the storm, the chicken house (darba) was broken and all the chickens disappeared. Whoever got these chicken flying into their home, they must've had a wholesome meal on this disastorous day!

Book: The Power of Intention

This week I was able to finish a book that I started almost a month ago.

The Power of Intention – Learning to Co-Create Your World Your Way by Dr. Wayne W. Dyer

My friend and colleague, Ashraf Gaffar, gave me this book. When I started it, it felt like the same Mumbo Jumbo that you see in the inspirational content industry. But after I was past the first chapter, it started grabbing my interest.

The author appears on TV and I have seen him several times, but never took it seriously. The book is written in a way that it could cover any religious belief (or non-belief). However, when I was reading the book, it seemed that he has translated The Quran or several Hadith there. On every page I was reading, I was remembered of some verses from Quran or some parts of Hadith. Most of his ideas are in line with the Islamic values system. This made this book so special to me and its suggestions so practical to apply in daily life.

One thing this book's Muslim readers should be careful about is his belief in pan-theism. He refers to it many times (not using these exact words, of course) and I had to filter-out or translate into compatible ideas  for  myself. So if you read this book, please make sure what pantheism is all about, what the correct belief is (and its contrast, which is thin, with the Islamic theological discourse of Wahdat-al-Wujood), and how to identify it. Once you have the right concepts, this book is wonderful to read and apply.

Happy Reading!

Putsch

Learned a new word today from Abdelhamid (colleague/friend)

Definitions of putsch on the Web:
  • coup d'etat: a sudden and decisive change of government illegally or by force
    wordnet.princeton.edu/perl/webwn
  • A coup d'état (pronounced 'kū dā ta'), or simply a 'coup', is the sudden overthrow of a government, usually done by a small group that just replaces the top power figures. It is different from a revolution, which is staged by a larger group and radically changes the political system. The term is French for "a sudden stroke, or blow, of a state". ...
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Putsch

Example: The Army, led by General Pervez Musharraf, staged a putsch again the Nawaz Sharif government in Pakistan.

No more putsches for Pakistan, please! ;o{

Yay for Jian Gomeshi

Jian Gomeshi is an art animator at CBC Radio.
Hosted "Sounds Like Canada" in Summer '06 and from there I know him.
His intros (when he starts a program) for Sounds Like Canada used to be a new poem everyday.

Yesterday, an anonymous caller called Q (his new program) and said that he should shorten his intros. For that, i wrote...

>>> "Muhammad Faraz Anwar" 06/12/07 2:36 pm >>>
...
I LOVE the introductions of your programs. So much so that even if I am
busy, I manage to listen to only the intro of the program.
Last year, I loved your intros for "Sounds Like Canada" (actually, better
than Q's).

...
And got the reply:

From: CBC Q Q@cbc.ca

Thanks for the supportive note Faraz,

the Q crew
Sometimes its good to encourage someone!! ;-)

Pundamentalism

Tappy Huesday!

I had a lot of pun in reading about Puns today; Inspired by "And sometimes Y" on CBC RadioOne yesterday.
Puns are plays-on-words that could be used as rhetorical devices or just for fun. For example, the title of this post is "Pundamentalisms" which is a pun on fun.

There are different types of puns, but my favorite and simplest are Spoonerisms.
Its when you swap first syllable of two words in a sentence to get a different, often funny, new meaning. E.g. "Go shake a tower" instead of "go take a shower".

We have these puns, including Spoonerisms in Urdu too. I remembered that we used to say "charatha" for Chai + Paratha (tea+bread for breakfast), and "makhhar machhian" instead of "Machhar makhhian" (Mosquitos and Flies).
Another very popular Spooner is the famous quip:
Q: "Aapki buji mein kia ghara hay??" (ghari (clock)/baja (rings))
A: "Nonay pon!!" (ponay nau (8:45))

Even holy Bible and Quran have puns (not the funny ones, of course also known as Literary Puns as rhetorical devices):
* Matthew 16.18: "Thou art Peter" [Greek Πετρος, Petros], and upon this rock [ Greek πετρα, petra] I will build my church." (Pun on Peter & Petra (personal-name and stone)
* Quran, Surah Abasa: "wama yudreeka la'allahu yazzakka. Aou yadzzakkaru fa tanfa'ahuz dzikra"
(pun on zakaa & dzikra (purify and remember/reminder) .
SubhanAllah, i just discocvered this in tonight's recitation... Quran is no doubt a linguistic miracle too!!

A very nice description of Puns on Wikipedia, alongwith different types:

Rappy Heeding~!! :-D

Welcome to Faraznama

So what is Faraznama?? Ok, you understand that Faraz is my name, but what is -nama??!!
-Nama is a suffix widely used in Farsi and Urdu. It means "message". Simple!!
Faraznama = Faraz's messages.

Here I will post everything that I run over, in news, radio, tv, music, or anything that catches my attention.

Enough for intro... enjoy reading Faraznama.
